FMP: 2019-20 Football Typeface

For my final SIP (Self Initiated Project), I chose to focus on creating my own typeface and designing it for a football strip for one of the top European football teams. Perhaps teams in the UEFA Champions League?
Having never, ever, had the opportunity of creating my own typeface in my course, I thought this would be the perfect time for relating my training in relation to the sport I have so much passion for!

I wanted to communicate and explore the theme of the galactical design.

One of my inspirations was from none other than Real Madrid FC with their deep regal history with the Spanish royal family. Furthermore, during the club’s second ‘Galácticos’ era in the early 21st century, some of their design fonts were in the symbolic visual status of wealth, power and brand Identity.

This type design follows a more edged grid design, which I referenced from my Sony Xperia XZ Premium exterior design, adding an element of a cut on the top right corner on each letter and a break or gap on the bottom left of the typeface.

MW Vol 3 edition is a combination of straights, curve and half midweight strokes, adding a minimalistic structure to the grid design, which I believe

makes it more recognizable in comparison to my first two experiments.

The concept behind this design stems from Dutch designer, Wim Crouwel’s Case Crouwel 2014 Netherlands Fifa World Cup, and France’s national

football team’s hexagon emblem in 2017. I wanted to aim for a minimalistic approach to this grid structure.

The aim was to focus on designing blocks or a stencil effect. Hence, this approach was going to be unique in comparison to other designs, but

keeping a structure and implementing a direct selection tool to all angles to the typeface.

My intention of this design was to make the font have ancient design and weight, resulting in the typeface to a have a rich history, preferably into a

club with a long and rich football heritage, for example, teams such as AC Milan, Olympiacos FC, PFC CSKA Moscow, or my favourite English team, Arsenal!
